Album Artwork Analysis- THE KILLS

The is the album artwork for The Kills second album which was titled 'No Wow'. I believe the main reason this artwork has drawn to my attention is as a result of the clear three section blocking that appears in addition to the arty images that give the cover its over all 'gloomy' feel. To begin with, the two images itself are somewhat opposite but still similar in very many ways. Both images contain the idea of the two artists hiding themselves from the camera but in what could be said as opposite ways. For example, the female artist has covered her top half whilst the male only revealing his eyes. When the two images are looked at together we still get the feel of a complete face looking towards us due to this. Even though the image has most definitely been captured in the same location, the split don the middle of the picture resulting in the creation of two separate images is something I really enjoy. I feel that this contributes to the cover looking sharp and edgy. The editing of the images themselves create the covers overall 'murky' and slightly glum feel. As the genre of the band are in fact indie/rock, we would stereotypically expect the band to deliver us something on the darker side of creation. Although, as the images are an 'off white' colour, this is a complete contrast to the black background and shadows in the images themselves. By doing this, the album still catches the eye. 

The bold, but slightly edgy font used for the band name ties in well with the 'worn' effect that we see going on in the images. Due to the off white colours in the images, this gives us the impression that the photos have been taken a long period of time ago. By incorporating this colour into the title, we once again gain that sense of continuity taking place in the vibe that the band have attempted to create through the artwork. The name of the band being overhead the two images is a clear sense of identification. This is simplistic, but something that I am very keen on. Additionally, after finally noticing the name of the album itself, this is my favourite element of the piece. By casually incorporating the album name into the idea of the images, it is there, but very subtle, and this is something I prefer if the album name does feature on the art. The hand written font used on what appears to be a piece of paper once again influences the casual nature of the images. 

Overall, I find this album cover very inspirational, as once again we have the idea of missing identities but in this piece, it is much more subtle and this may be something I consider when creating my own digipack. 

Album Artwork Analysis- THE HORRORS

This album 'Primary Colours' which was released by The Horrors earlier this year has artwork that I am hugely fond of. The distorted, unfocused, 'firey' snap that features on the cover influences and mysterious and slightly 'murky' feel to the band and the secrets behind the album itself. Taking the band name itself into context; 'The Horrors' immediately connotes something quite scary or what we would to consider to be unpleasant. Linking this theory into the image itself, the dark and slightly 'ghost like' and abstract vibe is something that is easily traceable throughout the photo, underneath the first glance of what we appear to be simplicity. 

The layout of the album art cover is minimal which is another aspect of the piece I am particularly fond of. As the name of the album let a lone the artist isn't displayed, this once again creates the idea of mystery which when incorporating all the factors together, seems to be creating a sense of continuity. Another feature we could compare this to is the band themselves, due to their lyrical genre fitting in perfectly with the 'indie' scene, stereotypically the band members themselves are gloomy and carry that slightly 'dark' image. Next, the fiery colour scheme which is highlighted as a result of the dark surroundings of the image creates the idea of fire or melting. When taking the orangey colour scheme to match the distortion of the photo itself, this could be portrayed as a 'warm' and welcoming image considering the darkness behind it. 

Something that I personally enjoy when taking a glance at this cover is the idea of feeling that the identities captured in the image have been hidden or are not even there at all. If I was to follow in similar footsteps to this album I would also be creating a sense of continuity as I have incorporated the idea of missing identity into our music video. Although, some may feel there is a lack of writing on the cover this is something I feel does work, but in contrast to this, when creating my own piece, I will aim to add a simplistic style of writing to publish the bands name and depending how busy the image is, album name too.
